Case study: Pregnancy Advisory Centre - Administration System
PACAS was developed as an upgrade and consolidation of two legacy database systems, and makes available 18 years worth of historical data via a user-friendly application, as well as enabling the organisation to track and report on all new clients and their attendances.
The PAC Administration System (PACAS) application has been progressively developed during 2008 as a replacement for two pre-existing database systems, CHSS (DBF database) and a Paradox-based system for recording of client operation information. The final implementation stage of PACAS, which took place early in 2009, involved migration of 16 years worth of historical data from these two different database systems into the existing PACAB database (which is based on Microsoft's SQL Server 2005 technology). Not only is there now a single coherent system for recording of client personal and PAC attendance information, but PAC administration staff now can easily view or report on all new or historical information that has been recorded since the centre's opening.
The user interface for PACAS has been designed to make common creation, editing or deleting operations easy for users, and the interface is consistent across all types of data in the system. PACAS allows recording of:
Asset and other administrative records
- Staff details
- Staff leave details
- Client details
- Client Episode / Attendance details
Reference information for Blood Loss Types, Services Provided, Country of Birth, and other 'standard' sets of information, can easily be maintained by PAC administrative staff. Both pre-existing, and adhoc reporting, is possible; the adhoc reporting tool has been specifically developed for PACAS, and allows administration staff to design and run their own reports.
PACAS has been integrated with the same database as the pre-existing PACAB system, allowing for data sharing between the two applications; the end result is saved administration time and resources, and more reliable and consistent handling of important client and medical data.
